Located southeast of the Caribbean Sea, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is one of the region’s best kept secrets. Also known as Hairouna, ‘Land of the Blessed’, it is home to a growing population of just over 109,000, offering an array of contrasts in its enchanting landscapes. Picture traditional arches in the island’s bustling capital of Kingstown, then envision lush, verdant mountains and alluring waterfalls in the countryside. Feast your mind on pristine white sandy beaches of the Grenadine isles, and then imagine shimmering jet black volcanic sand beaches on the island’s coast. With its tantalising landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and friendly people, it is easy to understand why the secret is slowly easing out of the bag.

It’s no wonder that thousands of visitors descend upon this blessed land to partake in the annual carnival. Vincy Mas is one of St Vincent and the Grenadines’ premier cultural festivals, with an eclectic burst of African and French influences. Having originated from traditions that began in the days of slavery, Carnival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines has evolved over the years, drawing from wider influences, yet still remaining uniquely Vincentian.  The season usually begins in May, featuring a variety of Vincentian talent in Steel Pan, Calypso and Soca music; Pageantry; and Masquerading. These festivities all culminate in one grand weekend of partying and revelling in the first week of July. It is widely known that Vincies ‘doh party normal’, and there is no end to the activities that take place on this climactic weekend. Rise early for J’ouvert jump up, and experience paint, oil, and powder in this early morning street party. On Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), soak in the kaleidoscope of colour as masqueraders parade through the streets of Kingstown, pulsating to the rhythm of a soca beat. Immerse yourself in the more contemporary all-inclusive fetes and concerts such as Soca Monarch, Brunch & Soca, Slippery When Wet, A:M Jamboree, etc., that take place all weekend.  Jam all day in the hot July sun, or dance in the refreshing tropical rain, the secret is you can do it all; there is something for everyone in the hottest carnival in the Caribbean.
