Saint Lucia Carnival

“The helen of the west indies”

"Let Her Inspire You"

She was once called Iyonola by the Amerindians and then Hewanorra by native Caribs; this quintessential island paradise lies North-East of St. Vincent, North-West of Barbados and South of Martinique. Who is she?

You've guess it, we're talking about good ole St. Lucia. Referred to also as the Helen of the West Indies due to the historical significance of the war between France and the British in the island's earlier years. St. Lucia has not only a strong British influence but also a strong French presence hence the prominence of the native tongue of Patois (" St. Lucian French Creole"). This island is a must visit island on anyone's caribbean bucket list.

St. Lucia boasts her illustrious mountains especially The Pitons(Gros Piton & its sibling Petit Piton), emerald green rainforest where you can explore via zip line, beaches where you can catch a glorious sunset like Reduit Beach, the caribbean's only drive in volcano where you can have a natural spa day in one of the sulfur pools, visit Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens or spend an evening mingling with locals at a street jump up or fish fry while learning the islands traditions. The island is lush and very much unspoiled and a perfect way to unwind while enjoying it's carnival festivities held in July or its re-known vibrant Jazz and Arts Festival held in early May.

St. Lucia Carnival is well known for it's Dennery Segment; a sub-genre of soca music which is quite infectious with it's syncopated bass and drums, afro-caribbean rhythms and its mix of french creole and english lyrics. Dennery segment took the soca world by storm in 2018 with Motto's 'Party Lit', Freezy's 'Split in the Middle' and Mighty and Subance " Bad in Bum Bum'. St. Lucia's carnival has a Power and Groovy Monarch, Panorama, Calypso Competitions, many private events and best of all a two day street jump up. So if you are an avid Masquerader count your self lucky because you get to portray your beautiful costumes for not one but two days. St. Lucia carnival embraces is history, culture and creativity and is one to definitely experience.
